Job Description

Title: School Nurse - .8 FTE

Reports to: Principal

Location: Curtis Middle School

Position Summary:

The School Nurse provides health services to students and school personnel, including but not limited to administering medications, performing ordered treatments, caring for illness, critical decision-making in emergency situations, maintaining confidentiality and documentation in accordance with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts laws and the policies and procedures of the Sudbury Public Schools.

Key Duties & Responsibilities:

Assess and evaluate students’ health, pertinent family history and home factors

Counsel students, parents and school personnel about health problems and issues;

Maintain appropriate health records;

Conduct and evaluate school health programs;

Notify appropriate individuals of immediate and potential health related problems;

Coordinate health resources of school, home, community and allied health agencies/hospitals by making necessary arrangements, maintaining records, notifying and counseling students, parents/guardians and health personnel;

Develop and implement student health care plans;

Documents pertinent information in student records;

Maintain medical supplies and make recommendations for purchase;

Provide emergency care for all individuals on school premises in the event of injury or sudden illness;

Administer medication to students with parent/guardian and physician consent;

Perform mandated screenings in vision, hearing, scoliosis, TB testing and other health related activities as deemed appropriate by state and city departments of public health;

Provide information about health and disease prevention in cooperation with health education programs;

Participate in school health related activities as deemed appropriate for school nurse by principal/supervisor;

Act as a resource in health education to students and families;

Initiate, promote, maintain and implement programs for the recognition, prevention and control of disease, including giving immunizations;

Other related duties as assigned.

Classification: Sudbury School Nurses’ Association Unit Position

Schedule:187 days (.8 FTE)

Salary: Commensurate with education and experience based on the terms of the collective bargaining agreement.

Job Requirements

Qualifications:

•Must have a current valid, license to practice as a Registered Nurse in Massachusetts;

•At least 2 years of relevant experience preferred;

•Must be certified by Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in educator category, Nurse, All Levels. (DOE certification eligibility currently requires a minimum of a BSN);

•Strong interpersonal communication skills.

Hiring is contingent upon a successful CORI and fingerprinting clearance. All finalists will be required to provide official transcripts.
