Job Functions, Duties, Responsibilities and Position Qualifications: Summary Under supervision of the Pathologist, the Histology Assistant, performs tasks to support the pathology technical staff in the areas of specimen procurement, processing, mounting and special staining of tissues and organs. Performance shall be evaluated by a qualified Pathologist and /or by the Histology Supervisor on a regular, periodic basis. Qualifications Bachelor or Associate Degree in laboratory science or science or medical technology from an accredited college or university is preferred High School Diploma or equivalent One or more years experience in a pathology laboratory preferred Medical Terminology, effective oral and written communication skills, excellent organizational and interpersonal, and computer literacy required Passes company drug testing program pre-hire and thereafter on a periodic and /or random basis For hospital settings, additional requirements may apply and change without notice. Demonstrated and proven ability/experience in accomplishments in all of our five core values: Shine Team Accurate Respect Standardize Essential Functions Under direct supervision, and in accordance with Company policies, procedures and guidelines, this position: Practices strict adherence to standard operating procedures, laboratory safety and infection control policies as required by state and federal accreditation agencies Organizes a large and varied workload, accommodating priority requests, focusing on immediate tasks despite interruptions Prepares tissues for gross examination. Assists the pathologist in dictation and dissection of tissue Performs related procedures including obtaining cultures, taking photographs, and saving tissues. Ensures proper labeling and storing of all specimens Consults with Pathologists regarding difficult analysis or abnormal findings Processes tissue specimens for microscopic examination and diagnosis by using appropriate methods for fixing, embedding, sectioning, staining and mounting Operates and maintains equipment used for tissue processing and staining, performing troubleshooting and minor maintenance repair. Performs and records preventive maintenance on equipment Maintains open communication with supervisor, pathologists, and co-workers to ensure optimal operation of the department Develops high level of proficiency through on-the-job training as well as through literature and available resources. Participates in examinations to test proficiency Prepares reagents and stains to meet departmental quality standards Performs special stains and assists in related procedures Monitors quality control of staining/processing methods, using alternate methods when appropriate and refers problems to supervisor or pathologist as needed Provides proper labeling and storage of all reagents Ensures accurate patient information, accession numbers and records on all surgical, autopsy and bone marrow specimens Resolves discrepancies or omissions in patient/clinical information Maintains filing system for rapid and accurate retrieval of all blocks and slides Assists with biohazard waste disposal; including tissue disposal Orders, picks-up and distributes supplies as needed Cleans laboratory glass and plasticware as needed, adhering to defined procedures of cleaning Adheres to confidentiality, safety, compliance, and legal requirements Maintains consistent and reliable attendance and complies with company guidelines on attendance Performs other duties as assigned Physical Capabilities Light to moderate physical effort (lift/carry up to 25 lbs.) Occasional carrying, pushing, and pulling of objects Occasional reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling, crouching Must be able to hear, see, and respond adequately Frequent prolonged standing, walking, sitting, and bending over Finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination Working Environment Air conditioned laboratory environment Must be able to work with cadavers and potentially diseased organs Frequent exposure to video display terminals Frequent contact with water (hand washing and cleaning), biohazardous body fluids, and occasional hazardous chemicals Sufficient noise and interruptions to cause distraction May be asked to work extended hours Skills/Abilities/Competencies CUSTOMER-FOCUSED: Aware of customer needs; makes decisions with customer in mind; builds strong customer relationships.
