Major Responsibilities
Meet with assigned class(s) at all scheduled times and locations, and provide instruction necessary for fulfilling course objectives.
Notify Dean of Health Professions and Medical Assisting Program Coordinator in the event that a class meeting is cancelled, changed, or when it is necessary to be absent from campus during hours of regularly scheduled responsibilities.
Prepare and distribute to the students, Dean of Health Professions and Medical Assisting Program Coordinator a course syllabus that is consistent with the official course brief for each class and sufficiently detailed so as to inform each student about policies concerning attendance, evaluation, and expected performance.
Provide students with appropriate educational, vocational, and social counseling that will constitute positive motivation for the educational progress of the student. Refer to appropriate resources for further counseling, student advising, etc.
Enforce college regulations concerning student behavior and building regulations.
Submit all required information such as attendance, midterm and final grades by the requested date.
Keep laboratory and/or instructional equipment secure. Recommend repairs and/or replacement when necessary.
Maintain student attendance records and employ a well-defined procedure for evaluating student progress following program policies.
Actively participate in evaluations of the curriculum and propose modifications as needed.
Actively participate in the assessment of classes and courses in order to improve student outcomes. Assessment report at the classroom level required each year prior to posted deadline.
Actively participate in student recruitment and enrollment growth initiatives.
Spend such time on campus each day as may be necessary to fulfill all professional obligations and willingly assume the various responsibilities, including committee participation, which normally constitute a teaching assignment. This includes such functions as private conference, follow-up on student progress and preparation of materials for class work. Time spent on campus must be a minimum of twenty (20) hours per week excluding overload. This includes classes, posted hours, and general preparation time.
Attend all regularly scheduled Medical Assisting Program meetings, College of Nursing & Health Professions Department meetings, and College meetings.
Adhere to the guidelines of any negotiated labor contract involving faculty.
Actively participate on committees and workgroups related to requirements for state/national agencies.
Other duties as assigned.
Assists With
Textbook and learning resource selection.
Curriculum evaluation and modification.
Budget preparation regarding supplies, material and equipment.
Preparation of class schedules.
Risk Management and Loss Prevention Activities
Actively participate in and carry out activities in support of the college Risk Management Program in a capacity appropriate to this position.
Monitor conditions, events, and circumstances present in the college operation and clinical sites during student instruction and supervision to avoid potential torts or injuries to students, staff, or the general public, and then communicate observations to the appropriate supervisor and / or Risk Management Committee.
Maintain a working knowledge of the college’s emergency procedures and how to operate emergency phone systems; including internal / external phone boxes.
Occupational exposure to blood or OPIM. Personal protection guidelines and practices are to be followed in order to minimize individual exposure.
Bloodborne pathogens exposure – category 1.
Minimum Necessary Skills, Experience, and Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in Medical Assisting or Nursing or A.A.S. degree in appropriate subject matter required. Master’s degree preferred.
Minimum one year (2,000 hours) of tested/verified work experience (other than teaching) in major field of instruction, as defined by criteria of the State of Illinois Community College Board Department of Academic Affairs and Career and Technical Education.
Minimum of three years clinical experience required, including a minimum of 160 hours in ambulatory healthcare or direct Medical Assistant supervision.
Minimum of one year teaching experience in postsecondary and/or vocational/technical education.
The ability to communicate successfully with students and clients of all ages, socioeconomic status, gender or race.
Working knowledge of the instructional program.
Maintain professional certification/licensure in the state of Illinois. Must be in compliance with appropriate licensing agency.
Online or technology-based pedagogical experience preferred.
Spanish or French proficiency preferred.
Physical Requirements to Perform Job Function
The general physical effort required includes standing and walking. Some bending, lifting and reaching is also necessary when instructing students.
The specific motor skills and sensory perception necessary to effectively instruct and evaluate students is based on the content, instructional methods, and objective of the program.
This is a security sensitive position and will require a background check as a pre-employment qualifier.
