Job Summary and Scope
In accordance with their license, performs Polysomnographic Studies on Children ages 12 years and older, Adults and Geriatric patients that includes activities such as applying electrodes and various monitors to multiple, body sites per protocol. They obtain data that measures wake, sleep, and breathing states and recording various signals from the brain and airways, cardiac rate, oxygen saturation and position to enable the physician to assess and diagnose disorders of sleep and breathing. Also serves as a role model to promote the SRMC Values, a positive work environment and efficient, quality patient care.
Essential Functions:
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops.
Report potential and actual patient safety, concerns, medical errors and or near misses in a timely manner thru the chain of command and document within the PSN system.
Establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional psychological and spiritual support to patient, friends and families.
Promote patient’s independence by establishing patient care goals; teaching patient, friends, identified ley caregiver and family to understand condition, medications, and self-care skills; answering questions.
Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams and resolve patient problems and needs by utilizing multidisciplinary team strategies.
Active participation in hospital strategic initiatives such as quality improvement and monitoring TJC compliance.
Calibrate polygraph, computer, oximeters, respitrace, movement monitors and patient electrodes prior to the onset of each recording. – 20 minutes
Inform patient about testing procedure to put them at ease so optimal test results can be obtained while applying electrodes and respiratory monitors to pre-designated body sites. – 1 hour
Prepare and record two Polysomnogram and maximum of three patients per night according to protocol. – 9 hours
Administer Continuous Positive Airway Pressure on specified patients according to physician orders. – 4 – 8 hours
Provide patient safety and comfort during PSG procedure. - Nightly
Provide patient log documentation and notations on each patient tested. - Nightly
Retrieve reports from the patient data filing system to provide results to the physician over the phone as needed. – 20 minutes
Analyze/score patient data and summarize on report for physician interpretation. – Average 1.5 hours per study.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications
Knowledge of the skills needed in the field of polysomnography
Knowledge of administrative and clerical procedures and systems such as word processing, managing files and records, forms, and other office procedures and terminology.
Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for service, and evaluation for customer satisfaction.
Good time-management skills.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to cooperate and interact with co-workers.
Education/Experience
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Licenses/Certifications
· CPR Certification or must obtain within 30 days of position
· Apply for either the New Mexico Medical Board Polysomnographic Technician Licensure or for the Respiratory Therapist Licensure (RRT) within 30 days of hire
Work Experience:
½ year (6 months) directly related experience
Supervision
Job is supervisory to the extent that daily work direction is provided to personnel in subordinate classifications.
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and a post offer drug screen.
Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
Tuberculin Skin Test required annually.

Working Conditions
Typical office and/or patient care, acute care hospital environment
Regularly exposed to the risk of bloodborne/airborne disease.
Contact with patients under wide variety of circumstances.
Must be able to travel locally between facilities and within the surrounding community.
Occasional exposure to minimal physical risk.
May be required to work irregular schedules including but not limited to as applicable: Nights, weekends, holidays, on-call, and overtime.
Will be expected to attend evening meetings at least once/month
Scoring of Polysomnograms may take place at the technologist’s home utilizing their personal computer and complying with all HIPAA rules related to maintaining and protecting patient privacy and Personal Health Information (PHI). Access to sleep studies for scoring will be done through the hospital’s secure network aka: Citrix.
