Job Summary and Scope
The Respiratory Therapist works to
provide the safest and most effective care of patients by promoting and restoring patients' health through the assessment of assigned patients that include recommended treatments and interventions that meet standards of care. The Respiratory Therapist will collaborate with physicians and multidisciplinary team members; provide physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families and ensure understanding of respiratory disease process and home care to support discharge. The Respiratory Therapist will provide clinical leadership for other staff; serve as a role model to promote the SRMC Values, and a positive work environment while providing efficient, quality patient care. The Therapist will ensure adherence to hospital and departmental policies and procedures. The Respiratory Therapist’s patient care assignment may include Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.
Essential Functions:
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops.
Assesses and evaluates patients for potential need of respiratory modalities, medications, or supplemental oxygen needs. Manages and maintains the airway and ventilation of the patient through the use of appropriate mechanical means.
Assures quality of care by adhering to therapeutic standards; measuring health outcomes against patient care goals and standards; making or recommending necessary adjustments; following hospital and division policies, philosophies and standards of care set by state board of governing agency regulations
Administers medications in a safe and efficacious manner as ordered by physician, via various modes of delivery.
Documents patient care services by charting in patient and department records in a timely and accurate fashion.
Assists in the maintenance of inventory levels by checking stock to determine inventory level, placing orders as needed, notifying Material Management of changes in PAR levels, putting orders away and by completing necessary paperwork. Maintains an adequate amount of supplies for the department by stocking the supplies when needed.
Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance requirements; following manufacturer's instructions; troubleshooting malfunctions; calling for repairs; maintaining equipment inventories; evaluating new equipment and techniques
Maintains continuity among teams by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential and medical records complete and accurate
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; establishing personal networks; participating in professional societies
Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed
Identifies changes in patient conditions and assist with or institutes appropriate actions in a timely manner
Collects quality assurance data where indicated. Actively participates in process improvement projects.
Performs ABG’s and other procedures within scope of practice as required and as trained.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience
Education:
Associates Degree in Respiratory Therapy
Licenses/Certifications:
Registered Respiratory Care Practitioner in State of New Mexico without restrictions or limitations
• CPR Certification or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position
• ACLS Certification or must obtain within 6 months of date of position
• PALS Certification or must obtain within 6 months of date of position
Work Experience:
Will consider new graduate
Preferred Educational/Experience Requirements:
B.S. in Respiratory Care or related field
1-2 years in specialty care unit
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check, reference checks and a post offer drug screen.
Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
Tuberculin Skin Test required annually

Working Conditions
Typical office and/or patient care, acute care hospital environment.
Must be able to travel locally between facilities and within the surrounding community.
