RN CLINICAL NURSE II/ACUTE PAIN NURSE - UNC ANESTHESIA PAIN SERVICE','NUR00RJC','!*!The primary purpose of the acute pain nurse position is to manage early morning care and morning rounds for inpatient pain patients. The acute pain RN will complete all required medical and billing documentation, coordinate educational material and in-services for floor nurses, be the first responder to beeper calls during duty hours, call the on-call resident or attending with questions, review the operating room schedule the previous workday and contact surgical attendings to verify appropriateness of epidural placement for post-operative pain management, start, run, and deliver epidural infusions to various locations in the operative suites and hospital patient care areas, and prepare patients for first start and subsequent epidural placement by the resident and pain anesthesiology attending physician. Supportive tasks might include placing peripheral IVs in patients to facilitate epidural placement. Additional duties include treating post-operative pain in the PACU based on established protocols, facilitating communication between the anesthesiologist, pain physician, and surgeon, assisting with research studies involving pain management (data collection, spreadsheet maintenance, protocol development, education of participants), management of lumbar drain placement by vascular anesthesiology, and assistance with the UNC Pediatric Pain and Sedation service, when requested. As the most consistent member of the Acute Pain Team, the acute pain RN will help develop and implement various QI initiatives, which can include, but are not limited to documentation, development of educational materials, and leading nursing education meetings. The work schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 0630-1500 hours, but may be flexed to meet the needs of the anesthesia pain teams. All of these duties should be readily managed during the outlined work day. ','!*!Graduation from a state-accredited school of professional nursing. Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina. Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
