JOB SUMMARY
The Trauma Performance Improvement Coordinator (TPIC) works in collaboration with the Director of Trauma and Trauma Section Chief and is responsible for the coordination and facilitation of the Trauma Performance Improvement Program (TPIP). This encompasses all aspects of care provided by many disciplines to injured patients from the prehospital area throughout the hospitalization to discharge and recovery.
The Trauma PI Coordinator provides coordination and facilitation of performance improvement through data collection, analysis, trending and benchmarking of outcomes. S/he provides leadership in the development and implementation of quality improvement and patient safety initiatives focused on injured patients across departmental areas and represents the Trauma Service during complex root cause analysis of adverse and sentinel events. The position requires facilitation of workgroup and team efforts associated with accreditation as a Level One Trauma Center and maintaining compliance with all requirements established by the Commonwealth of Virginia Department of Health and the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma. S/he participates in trauma registry data collection, creating and validating reports, the validity and accuracy of registry data and works closely with Carilion Clinic TSG and the designated vendor to maintain confidentiality and prevention of cyberspace piracy while troubleshooting any registry related problems. S/he is responsible for accurate and timely submission of registry data to the Virginia State Trauma Registry (VSTR) and the National Trauma Database/TQIP . Collaborates closely with the Director of Trauma and Trauma Section Chief to ensure confidentiality in physician peer review including follow up action plans and loop closure or event resolution. Is ultimately responsible for maintaining a process for safeguarding the meaningful data that is reported to the Hospital Joint Quality Committee and the Medical Staff Peer Review Oversight Committee.
Works with an ever increasing level of independence and exercises discretion in the performance of duties. Frequent communication about complex and confidential issues with physicians, patients, staff, and other organizations to maintain the flow of information to coordinate patient and to resolve problems is required. Issues may require communication with risk management, patient safety and the legal department staff and could have an impact on legal compliance, fiscal results and compliance with state and national requirements as a Level One Trauma Center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: Graduation from an accredited School of Nursing required. Bachelor's degree in nursing or related field required. Master's degree in nursing or related field preferred. Preference will be given to Registered Nurses with diverse clinical experience or experience in Quality Management or Performance Improvement
Experience: 5 years clinical nurse experience required in trauma patient care. Experience in project management related to quality initiatives or performance improvement required. Knowledge of principles of hospital quality preferred
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: License as a Registered Nurse in the state of Virginia required. Certification as a Professional in Healthcare Quality preferred. Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) preferred.
