Support Carilion's hallmarks of service excellence and quality for all job responsibilities. Collects blood and urine from patients of all ages in a manner which ensures maximum safety, expertise and comfort for the patient for laboratory tests. Promotes excellent public relations with patients, physicians and office staff.
*Verifies patient identification. *Obtains blood specimens using methods appropriate to the age and condition of the patient. (Venipuncture, finger puncture, or heel puncture). The goal is for successful blood collection on first attempt. Proper specimen collection and preservation methods are used. *Executes isolation, safety and biohazard procedures. *Reviews physician's order for medical necessity and/or ABN information. *Verifies questionable nomenclature or ordered lab tests. *Administers sugar solution to patients requiring glucose tolerance procedure. Monitors patient for any negative reaction to procedure. *Provides supplies and/or containers for 24 hour urine or feces collection. Instructs patients on how to collect specimen. *Adheres to Carilion's biohazard and safety policies. *Processes specimens and prepares for delivery to laboratory.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education: HS diploma or equivalent education required.
Experience: Three years of related experience preferred.
Licensure, certification, and/or registration: National Phlebotomy Certification preferred.
Other Minimum Qualifications: Effective interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills required. Must have computer skills in order to enter data in to electronic medical record. Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for position.
