JOB SUMMARY

As a member of the Pediatric Trauma Team works to promote the optimal care of the pediatric trauma patients throughout the region and within the guidelines established by the Commonwealth of Virginia and the American College of Surgeons. S/he is responsible for aiding in the planning and implementation of community injury prevention, trauma education, performance improvement and additional tasks as related to complex and critically injured pediatric patients. In addition, s/he works to advance the practice in caring of injured children to increase awareness about the hospital’s reputation for excellence in pediatric trauma care as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. The Pediatric Trauma Nurse Educator provides educational services to outside facilities, prehospital agencies and hospital staff supporting the integration and application of evidence-based practice and critical thinking skills to provide optimal patient outcomes for critically injured children.

Education: Graduate of School of Professional Nursing, BSN required (or plan in place to obtain BSN within 2 years).

Experience: Minimum of 2 years recent pediatric trauma, critical or emergency care nursing experience with responsibilities reflecting direct patient care. Experience in public speaking and teaching preferred.

Licensure, certification, and/or registration:  Current nursing license from the Commonwealth of Virginia required. Specialty certification such as CEN, CCRN (pediatric) preferred. Must be current in BLS, ACLS, and PALS. TNCC required within 6 months of hire. Must have a valid driver’s license.

Life Support: AHA-BLS required.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must be a team player with a strong ability to think globally. Must be capable of building successful relationships with healthcare professionals and community partners. Must have effective written and verbal communication skills and be self-directed, innovative, and resourceful. Must be capable of being an ambassador for Carilion Children’s, specifically as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. Experience with Microsoft Office, such as Excel, Power Point and Word essential. Background/ experience in pediatric trauma and critical care pathophysiology and patient care management preferred.OUR VALUES
