Job Summary
Demonstrates detailed knowledge of decontamination and sterilization techniques. Has a strong understanding of The Joint Commission (TJC) expectations and compliance of sterility and machine controls and how it can affect patient care. Is able to assemble instrument sets, trays, equipment and machinery in a timely fashion and work autonomously. Has clear knowledge of trouble shooting equipment. Assists with turn over targets, orders supplies as directed, assembles, packages, and sterilizes instruments and trays as requested by other departments. Maintains quality controls and will report compliance or equipment issues to department supervisor or Manager. Serve as a role model to promote the SRMC Values, a positive work environment and efficient, quality patient care. The primary role of this position is to assure proper decontamination and sterilization of equipment and instruments.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops.
Manually sorts, decontaminates and inspects all instruments before processing. Cleans and oils all power equipment and disinfects all patient care equipment.
Loads all sterilizers properly. Runs a biological test with every load, documents time, temperature and psi after each load and incubates spore test. Reads sport test and records before putting instruments away. Follows policy for any positive reading.
Assembles instrument sets, checks instrument sets for proper working condition and cleanliness and selects proper chemical indicator and correct instrument container.
Coordinates with OR and SPD staff regarding any immediate turn-around instrumentation and utilizes the next day’s schedule to set priorities.
Maintains clean work areas and operates and troubleshoots equipment.
Stores all equipment at end of shift, places instruments in proper locations and rotates stock
Orders and stocks supplies on an ongoing basis.
Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs.
Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
Education:
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Preferred Qualifications/Requirements
Education:
Nationally Recognized Certification in Sterile Processing/Central Supply
Work Experience:
One (1) year directly related experience

Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and a post offer drug screen.
Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
Tuberculin Skin Test required annually
Working Conditions
Typical office and/or patient care, acute care hospital environment.
Must be able to travel locally between facilities and within the surrounding community.
