The HSL role embodies our medical mission in becoming a trusted, agile partner who engages in relevant dialogue and delivers timely, high impact data and insights that advance the science or accelerate access, optimize medical practice and drive appropriate adoption of BMS medicines. The HSL role is a field-based role and it is anticipated that an HSL will spend a minimum of 70 - 80% of their time in the field with external customers.
The primary role of an HSL is to provide coverage and build relationships with Oncology Access Influencers (AIs) and Market Access organizations. The purpose of interactions is to ensure patients and providers have access to BMS medicines, to ensure their safe and appropriate use through peer-to-peer discussions aligned with medical strategies and needs expressed by the stakeholders. The scientific dialogue focuses on cost/value/market access information and clinical differentiation around BMS products in a fair and balanced way.
External Environment and Customer Focus
Identify, develop and maintain scientific and business relationships with AIs, and access stakeholders, within a given geography to answer scientific, unsolicited product and HEOR-related questions. These relationships will be built on scientific exchange as well as value/HEOR discussions concerning oncology treatment options. HSLs should be seen as a resource by local (institutional), regional (pathway) and national (NCCN) AIs. HSLs will use various channels for interactions (1:1, group presentation; remote, etc).
Effectively engages AIs and market access organizations in clinical dialogue, scientific exchange, and clinical differentiation in conjunction with or at the request of BMS stakeholders (e.g. Value, Access & Payment, HEOR Research). Has a solid understanding of access dynamics within assigned institutions and pathways. Ensures medical accuracy and compliance with local procedures, ethical and legal guidelines and directives.
Actively assess the medical landscape by meeting with AIs to understand their needs and expertise. Continuously update own knowledge in treatment/value strategies, products, unmet medical needs, and scientific activities. Understand the health plan landscape and actively prepare to address informational needs of AIs.
Attend medical congresses and local/regional meetings that serve as venues and forums for AI and Health Systems decision-makers. Collect and provide impactful medical insights back to the medical and commercial organizations to be actioned in support of the strategy development.
Contribute to the Medical Plan
Supports input and alignment of AI databases and activities with internal planning documents including but not limited to the Medical Plan, Value Access & Payment Plan and HEOR Research Plan.
Adopt institution/account planning approach and contribute to cross-functional institution/account plans.
Contribute to development and delivery of scientifically meaningful specialized projects related to the medical support of the US Oncology product portfolio.
Provide Medical Support
Provides support cross-functionally and collaboratively in the AI identification process and incorporates input from Medical Strategy teams and additional internal stakeholders (e.g. Value, Access & Payment, HEOR Research). These cross-functional collaborations will also work to develop field content to support AI engagement and scientific exchange activities.
As necessary and appropriate, support the ongoing clinical and value training and provide key scientific updates to internal stakeholders (Value, Access & Payment, HEOR Research).
Required Experience
MD, PharmD or PhD, with experience in a specific Disease Area or with a broad medical background (preferred) OR Science Graduate with relevant pharmaceutical experience
A minimum of 2 years working in a clinical or pharmaceutical environment (excludes post-doc education)
Advanced degree in epidemiology (MPH), economics (MBA) and/or HEOR is highly desirable Knowledge Desired
Knowledge of the national healthcare and access environment
Knowledge of health plan drug utilization decision-making is highly desired
Knowledge of Oncology disease area
Knowledge of Managed Care area
Knowledge of HEOR core concepts
Excellent English language skills, spoken and written
Travel required (up to 80% of time; varies by geography) Experience Desired
Highly professional with good relationship-building, communication and presentation skills
Ability to articulate complex scientific and economic principles/findings with simplicity and clarity
Ability to negotiate with internal and external constituencies to achieve desired results and outcomes
Ability to work independently and act as a team player
Developing peer-to-peer relationships with AIs, scientists and other healthcare professionals
Ability to quickly and comprehensively learn about new subject areas and environments
Essential Qualification
Ability to drive a company-provided car is an essential qualification of this position. Candidates must be able to drive a BMS-provided vehicle between locations (often great distances apart), and arrive at each location ready and able to enthusiastically and efficiently demonstrate an applied knowledge of pertinent health care industry trends. Candidates must possess a high level of ethics, integrity and responsible and safe driving history.
