Job Summary
The Bariatric Program Nurse Coordinator provides clinical and operational support to the surgeons and patients of the Bariatric Program. The Coordinator is the primary contact for patients, works closely with the providers to ensure the appropriate patients are scheduled with the appropriate tests (imaging, laboratory, etc.), and resolves patient concerns and issues. Coordinates patients and services between SRMC, the UNMH Surgery Clinic, UNM School of Medicine and the operating rooms. Serves as a practice resource and educator for patients and staff. Patient care assignments may include all age groups.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops.
Coordinate quality initiatives and activities and assist with the development of written standards and protocols.
Serves as a liaison between providers, patients, and staff by assisting with education needs, problem resolution, and health management
Serves as a clinical resource, ensuring quality patient care that meets national and quality standards
Proactively coordinate and communicate with various departments (both external and internal) to coordinate services, resolve operation issues, and improve quality of patient care
Serve as the primary contact for external referring providers: appoint patients, maintain communication regarding patient’s status, build relationships with provider staff.
Review internal ad hoc requests and coordinate with Centralized Scheduling to appropriately schedule patient based on provider preference, acuity or illness, etc.
Coordinate operating room schedules and availability for the Division of Surgery
Work closely with the Clinic Unit Director to improve efficiency and patient flow.
Coordinate provider schedules between the clinics (UNM Health System) and the operating room
Review clinic schedules to ensure patient have the lab tests, imaging, etc. required for the clinic visit
Work closely with the providers and clinic staff resolve patient complaints and concerns, and improve patient satisfaction
Serves as a resource and coach for Quality Assurance Projects in the Clinics.
Serves as a resource and participates in any compliance issues or initiatives.
Responsible for assurance of accurate and timely documentation of information related to patient care activities, regulatory requirements, data collection and statistical reporting.
Maintains current knowledge of industry safety and performs ongoing assessment of the environment for safety compliance.
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications/Requirements
Education:
Graduate from an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor degree in Nursing
Licenses/Certifications:
New Mexico license required; BSN required, or must obtain within 12 consecutive calendar months of position; and CPR Certification for Healthcare Providers or for Professional Rescuers, or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position.
Work Experience:
At least 2 years of medical practice nursing experience.
Experience working in hospital or ambulatory surgery center
Preferred Qualifications/Requirements
Education:
Master’s Degree in Nursing
Work Experience:
3 years of directly related experience
Required Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
Thorough knowledge and understanding of clinical protocol, procedures and standards
Ability to provide operational guidance and leadership to technical staff in area of specialty
Strong organizational and coordination skills.
Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures
Demonstrated nursing skills in area of specialty.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work effectively at all levels in a collaborative, customer service oriented, team environment.
Ability to plan, implement and evaluate individual patient care programs.
Conditions of Employment
Basic Life Support (BLS)
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check and a post offer drug screen.
Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
Tuberculin Skin Test required annually
Must obtain annual influenza vaccination.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an interior medical/clinical environment.
Will work with blood or blood-borne pathogens and will require OSHA training.
Occasional risk exposure to unusual elements such as toxic chemicals, bio-hazardous materials requiring awareness of safety precautions. May include the use of protective equipment.
Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
Moderate physical activity. Requires exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
