Job Summary and Scope
A
ssist in the nursing and medical care of patients in the Emergency Department. Respond to medical emergencies throughout Sandoval Regional Medical Center buildings and property, and provide medical assistance in collaboration with registered nurses, the House Supervisor, and SRMC physicians. Serve as a role model to promote the SRMC Values, a positive work environment and efficient, quality patient care. Report compliance or equipment issues to the department Director or Charge Nurse. Ensure adherence to Hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Patient care assignments may include neonate, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups.
Essential Functions:
POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops
Administer oxygen, cardiac monitor, place IV’s, obtain blood specimens, catheterize patients, and place NG tubes under emergency department physician orders or emergency department protocols or guidelines
Answer phones, and operate computer systems
Performs routine specialized non-invasive treatment procedures as required
Perform EKG’s
Perform basic and advanced airway management techniques, including endotracheal intubation, as well as placement and monitoring of extraglottic airway devices, contingent upon initial and continued authorization by Emergency Department Medical Director and Emergency Department Director
Perform intraosseous, external jugular, and peripheral intravenous vascular access according to physician order or SRMC policies and guidelines.
Perform cardiac monitoring, defibrillation, cardiac pacing, administer Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) medications in collaboration with SRMC RN’s and physicians on patients experiencing a cardiac arrest or life-threatening medical emergency or condition
Transport patients, collect, label, and transport specimens, equipment, supplies, charts, and materials, to include arterial blood gas specimens
Assist nursing staff/physicians in complicated treatment procedures
Apply orthopedic splints as directed
Maintain equipment, stock supplies and transport patients
Promote team work and patient care in hospital setting by operating computer systems, perform a variety of clerical duties in support of assigned area to include data entry, answer phones, enter orders, assist as needed, and maintain files and other related duties
Observe patient to ensure their safety and well-being; report observations to Charge Nurse or appropriate designee
Assist with activities of daily living (ADL): meals, ambulation, hygiene, linen change and toileting as instructed
Provide basic patient care; take and record vital signs to include temperature, pulse, respiration, weight, height, blood pressure and intake-output measurements
Educates and advises patients on specific medical issues within established parameters
Assist RN's with application and monitoring of patients in physical restraints
May assist RN's with response to medical emergencies within SRMC and on SRMC property
Assist/perform patient transport utilizing wheelchairs, stretchers & beds
Perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Education/Experience
Education:
Accredited paramedic program graduate
Licenses/Certifications:
Licensed Paramedic (EMT-P) in the State of New Mexico
CPR
certification or must obtain within thirty (30) calendar days of date of position
ACLS certification or must obtain within sixty (60) calendar days of date of position
Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) certification or must obtain within sixty (60) calendar days of
date of position
• Basic Arrhythmia Certification or equivalent within one (1) year of date of position
• ED Paramedic Matrix – Complete and maintain unit/clinic based required certifications and competencies as listed in the department expectations and or the unit/clinic education matrix
Work Experience:
2 years ER experience and/or
2 years pre-hospital experience in a high-volume, progressive EMS agency or department
Preferred Educational/Experience Requirements:
Bachelors Degree or higher degree
• Nationally certified in area of specialty
• Dual Language Certification
Conditions of Employment
Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check, reference checks and a post offer drug screen.
Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).
