When someone breaks a bone or swallows something that is stuck within the wind pipe, an x-ray machine is used to view within the patient's body. The professional that operates this equipment is known as an x-ray technician. In order to work in this field, you will have to acquire the right formal training. Once you graduate, you will be able to work within clinics and hospitals.

Role

The role of an x-ray tech is to create x-ray images of different parts of the patient's body, as directed by the doctor, who will be diagnosing the patient. In this field, you will be responsible for explaining how the procedure works to the patient and ensuring that they are not wearing any accessories, like necklaces or earrings. Then positioning them correctly is also their duty. Setting the proper controls on the x-ray machine is the technicians job to ensure that everything is done correctly. After the shots have been taken, the x-ray technician removes the film and develops it for viewing.



Other Duties

Other then capturing images of the patient's body, the x-ray tech is also required to maintain patient medical records and equipment, set appointments and schedules and buy equipment. In some cases, they are also required to oversee the radiology department.

Specialized Fields

As an x-ray technician, you can specialize in a certain area of the medical field. For instance, some work in CT, which is computed tomography. Others work in MRI, which creates cross-sectional photos. Then there are some that work in mammography, which is when the tech takes images of the breasts in search of cancer.

Education

In order to become an x-ray tech, you will have to study in a one year program to obtain a certificate. You will also have to obtain a bachelor's degree. The one year course is offered to medical professionals that are in fields like registered nursing and medical technology.
