Examinations
One role of an ultrasound technologist is to give patients exams. In these cases, a transducer is used to transmit the sound to the patient's body. Echoes are then formed, bouncing off of the insides of their body. The results are then assessed using the computer on the ultrasound machine.
Skills
Some of the skills that ultrasound techs will have to have include good interpersonal skills. They will also have to be able to speak great and write great. They will have to create records of patient medical histories and be able to explain to patients about the condition and treatments they're being provided with. Reports also have to be given to physicians regarding the patients.
Specializations
There are various areas that technologists are able to work in, including medical labs, physicians' offices, mobile imaging centers and hospitals. Some of the areas they could specialize in include echocardiographic, obstetric, abdominal, neurosonography, ophthalmologic and gynecologic sonography.
Continuing Education
With technology always upgrading, it is required that ultrasound techs stay abreast of the field. For instance, the transference of 3D to 4D ultrasound. You can obtain training at a vocational school, university, tech school, hospital and community college.
Certificates
It is required that techs obtain a license to work in this field. They can receive certificates through the American Registry Diagnostic Medical Sonographers.
