It takes about a year to complete the certification program. In your course, you will learn about noninvasive diagnostic exams and ultrasound equipment. You are also able to obtain a higher degree, such as an associate's or bachelor's degree.
First, you will need to get a high school diploma or GED. A lot of programs want you to have a prior experience in the medical field as well. But if you have a diploma and have taken classes in math, liberal arts and science, you will find a program.
Now, you will have to go to the CAAHEP, also known as the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Program; they have a website you can go to that shows you ultrasound tech training programs that are accredited. Find one that suits you and is close to you.
Next, you will need to get into the program you have found and complete it. You will have to complete classroom training and clinical training. The clinical training can take between three and six months to complete. The clinical training is similar to an internship, where you work without getting paid. Then after completion, you may get hired. After you graduate, you will be able to work in the ultrasound field, either in OB-GYN, mammography or abdominal sonography.
