A pedorthist is a medical professional that works with footwear and helping patients to correct problems that they have within their feet and other limbs around it. In this profession, the professional is required to choose, develop or modify special devices and footwear to help enhance the mobility of their patients.

Some of the items used by podiatrists (foot doctors) include casts, molds and computer models of the foot, which are then sent to the pedorthist with directions. The pedorthist then adjusts fits, manufactures and modifies the devices to meet the requirements of the podiatrist. You will see that the work of orthotics and pedorthists tend to overlap here and there, but pedorthotists are known to have more of a focus on ankles and areas below it. If you like working with your hands and helping people to better their lives physically, this could be the career path for you. The average annual salary for this field is around $28,000. The amount of money that can be made in this field depends on where you live and who you're employed by. This is a growing field due to the aging population that needs foot care.

First you will need to ensure that this is the right career path for you. If you are great with hands on work, then you might enjoy this line. You must also be detail oriented.

After you have confirmed that this is something you want to pursue, you will need to get properly trained. You can pick from National Commission on Orthotics and Prosthetic Education, also known as NCOPE, approved programs within America. You will need to have a high school diploma or degree to get into these programs. Next, you will need to obtain a certificate. Without it, you will have no proof that you have been educated enough in this field. You will have to 1,000 hours of experience in patient care before or after you have obtained your education. After certification, you will need to get a license.
