The field of genetics is always enhancing and changing each day, making it important to bring aboard more genetic counselors. There is still a lot of controversy surrounding preimplantation genetic diagnosis - some are for it and others are against it.

Some believe that it goes against ethics. If you were to become a genetic counselor, you would be required to be knowledgeable about the science of the test results of the diagnosis for preimplantation genetics. Here is what you'll have to do to become successful in this field.

Just as with many medical fields, you will have to obtain a post secondary schooling. More specifically, you will need a bachelor's degree in the field of biology or another related area. You will have to learn about genetics and how genes are passed on from the parents to their children. In genetics, you will have to know math and biology. Obtaining an undergraduate degree in the field of biology will help you to understand the basics of genetics. You can even go on to obtain a master's degree.



Since this is a new area, but you should be able to find schools that offer degree programs for genetic counseling. You will need to obtain a master's degree.

After you graduate, you will need to obtain certification, which requires clinical experience. Then you will need to take and pass the American Board's Genetic counseling test. Afterward, you can begin looking for work.

Once you obtain a job in this field, you will need to be able to explain genetics in layman's terms to everyday people. For instance, prenatal screening is being used more and more because it helps to ensure that infants come out healthier and grow up stronger.
