Duties
Some of the tasks that you would have in the profession of dental hygiene would be to help the dentist with caring for the patients. They also perform cleanings, help with taking x-rays and promote good oral hygiene. They are also known to help with a variety of other dental procedures as well.
Conditions in the Workplace
The typical schedule for a dental hygienist is 40 hours weekly inside of a dentist office. There are some that work within schools, hospitals and research labs.
Education
To work in dental hygiene, you will have to obtain an associate's degree from a school that offers a dental program. The school must be accredited as well. After you graduate, you will have to obtain a license through the state by taking the exam offered through the American Dental Association, or ADA.
Salary
The amount you can earn yearly in the field of dental hygiene all depends on your level of experience, area you work in and the duties you have. On average, the annual salary is between $35,000 and $64,000.
Outlook
It is expected that this field will grow by 30 percent through 2016.
