As a dental hygienist, you are required to help patients maintain good oral health. Keeping teeth clean and gums healthy is your priority. If you find any disease or other presence within the patient's teeth or gums, you would notify the dentist.

Types

There are different types of instruments that are used by the dental hygienist, such as hand and rotary tools, x-ray machines and ultrasound equipment.



Function

When using the hand and rotary tools or ultrasound equipment, it is used for cleaning and polishing teeth. Then the x-ray machine is used for taking pictures of teeth.

When tooth decay first comes about, the first line of defense is a dental hygienist. They are also used to help gum disease and cavities. People that regularly visit the dentist are able to maintain healthier mouths and more attractive smiles.

Restrictions

Surgical procedures are not performed by the dental hygienist. But in some states, they are allowed to remove stitches and provide anesthesia.

Strict safety measures are always required to be taken by the dental hygienist. Some of these safety measures include wearing gloves, safety glasses and masks during surgical procedures. This protects themselves and their patients.
