Primary Duties
In this field, you will be required to use music therapy to help heal the mental and physical well-being if different patients. You will have to record their processes and responses. The music therapist also has to organize, prepare, evaluate and conduct the sessions for music therapy.
Work Locations
There are a variety of settings a music therapist can work, such as in general hospitals, psychiatric hospitals, nursing homes and correctional facilities. Some even find work within schools, community centers and universities.
Career Outlook
According to the AMTA, or American Music Therapy Association, the industry reported having 75 job openings in 2005. It is expected that job growth for this field will continue to grow steadily.
Salary
According to Temple University, music therapists reported having an annual salaries between $29,000 and $38,000 in 2009. The amount they are paid depends on their training, experience in the field and place of employment. Those that are employed by government agencies and schools tend to earn more than those who work for private sectors.
Education
To work in this field, you will have to obtain at least a bachelor's degree in music therapy. You will also have to complete an internship and then pass the national exam for certification, which is offered by the CBMT, or Certification Board for Music Therapist.
