Identification
According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, it is expected that the ultrasound technology field will grow by 19 percent through 2016. This is much faster than other career fields.
Effects
Since the growth of this field is expected to grow so much, there is an anticipated 8,700 new positions that will open up for sonographers by 2016 (according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics).
Factors
The top reason why it is believed that there will be this much growth in the field is because the U.S. BLS believes that more patients are going to request this technology for tests. This is because ultrasounds are safer than other technologies like x-rays, CT scans and MRIs. The ultrasound can do the same, allowing sonographers to detect and diagnose more illnesses and diseases.
Location
A lot of sonographers work in hospitals, but it is expected by the U.S. BLS, that there will be more job opportunities opened up in doctors' offices, outpatient care centers and diagnostic treatment centers.
Education
If you would like to work in the field of ultrasound technology, you will need to attend a community college for two years to obtain an associates degree or attend for four years to acquire a bachelors degree in ultrasound technology. There aren't any requirements by states when it comes to obtaining a license in this field, but certification can be obtained through the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography, which offers a voluntary exam. Getting this certificate looks better on your resume as well.
