The medical biller submits the insurance claims to the insurer and reconciles any claims that have issues. Becoming a medical coder & biller means that you will need to know a lot of specialized knowledge; you will have to undergo special training in order to ender into this field.
Instructions
Step One: When you're training a medical biller & coder, you will have to give them an overview of the job. It's important that the individual doesn't get confused between billing and coding because these are two separate jobs. For medical coding, it is required that the individual uses numeric and alphanumeric codes to translate procedures and treatment descriptions; these are entered into an insurance claim form. Then the biller is the one that submits the form to the insurer. In some cases, one person will handle the coding and billing processes.
Step Two: Teach the great importance of knowing medical terminology. Without it, neither job function can be performed properly. Medical terminology courses are available at colleges and vocational schools.
Step Three: You must also teach the difference between inpatient and outpatient facilities. With inpatient coding, they are dealing with extended hospital stay admissions. Outpatient coding involves outpatient surgery and emergency room treatments. Each have different rules.
Step Four: Next, you will need to teach coding - ICD, HCPCS, CPT and ICD-9-CM. Make sure that the individual you are training understands the different codes you are teaching. Then teach the billing process. Encourage them to keep on training and to receive certification from an accredited institution.
