Step One: The first thing you need to do is find an accredited program that offers billing and coding. You can search around local vocational schools and colleges that offer certificates and degrees. Some popular schools online are University of Phoenix and Herzing College.
Step Two: When you find a school that you are interested in, you can ask them if they are accredited. Ensuring that the school is accredited will help to make sure that you are able to find employment later on. Some employers won't accept training from a school unless it was accredited.
Step Three: Next, you will need to find out whether the school teaches ICD-9 or ICD-10 coding. The current coding method is ICD-9 for many states, but it has been stressed that it is important that medical billers and coders learn ICD-10 codes.
Step Four: Now, you can apply for the schools of your choice. Once you graduate from the programs, you can begin looking for work at hospitals and doctor's offices.
Step Five: Apply at jobs that are looking for entry level medical billing and coding specialists if you aren't looking to obtain formal training.
Step Six: You will need to take the exam to get a CPC, certified professional coder, certificate. This is given from AAPC or Certified Medical Billing Specialist, CMBS.
