Step One: The first thing you need to do is go to school to train to become a respiratory technician. You can either attend a business college or a junior college to obtain an associate's degree or a certificate. From a business school, it will take just six months of studying to obtain a certificate.
Step Two: The next thing you need to do is apply for an NPI, or National Provider Identification, number, along with a business license. You will also have to bill the insurance companies of your clients since you will be dispensing medical equipment like ventilators, concentrators and nebulizers. When billing the insurance companies, you will need to have an NPI. You can also incorporate your respiratory technician business as the sole proprietor, or an LLC, which means Limited Liability Corporation. You should also speak with a lawyer that specializes in small business start-ups, in order to help you with determining how to set up your business that will give you limited liability.
Step Three: Now, you can begin negotiating the rates that you will have to pay vendors that you buy the medical equipment from.
Step Four: Begin contacting insurance companies that you may be sending bills to.
Step Five: You can let the hospitals, sleep labs, clinics and other health care facilities in your area know that you are providing respiratory care.
