Physician assistant aspirants must have had 2 years of college and some health care experience. The prerequisite for taking any program for physician assistant is your cumulative grade point average which must be 350 and above. Many colleges insist on taking up Graduate Record Exam.

Besides, you are required to take a few general subjects such as English, biology, chemistry (organic chemistry recommended, college mathematics, humanities and psychology till you reach the 12th grade.

To get the PA license you have to pass the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam of the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). Only graduates of certified programs can take this exam. Having got the license and if one wants remain certified one has to complete 100 hours of medical education every two years. Every six years they must take an exam to be recertified or complete another program and take home exam.



For PAs desiring to hone skills in more specific areas, there are opportunities to further study in pediatrics, neurology, surgery etc.

PA aspirants must know how smart they are. They must be able to understand what people say. They must be able to communicate clearly with others. They should have the skill to take right decisions at the right moment. They should have good reasoning skills. They should be able to understand issues in medicine and put the theories they have learnt to real life situations. Must be able to manage their emotions and keep good relationship with patients and colleagues.

PAs have openings in doctor’s offices, hospitals, outpatient care centers, health maintenance organizations, the government, universities, colleges and schools. Depending on the experience, a PA gets anything between $ 70,000 and $ 100,000 a year.

The PA profession is attractive that those who are in some other medical capacity desire to become certified PAs.
