The training and education required for a hospitalist are
- Hospitalists must complete a 4 year bachelor’s degree course. In addition to this they must also complete 4 years course in a medical degree from an accredited medical school.
- In addition, a hospitalist also must complete several years of graduate medical education (GME) to include a one-year internship, plus 3 years of residency training.
- A hospitalist is also required to pass certain medical certifications and licensing examinations as required for their particular profiles and positions.

Generally, small hospitals do not have the funding capacity to hire hospitalists. The average compensation that a hospitalist in the US can get ranges from $175,000 to $250,000. Hospitalists with good leadership qualities can aspire to be director of a hospitalist group. Their responsibilities include coordinating the schedules of the entire group to make sure that proper coverage is provided to the hospital at all times, as well as provide quality assurance and address other professional issues. Directors of such groups can easily earn $15,000 - $20,000 extra.
