It's common for healthy people to carry staph without being infected by it. But staph can be a problem if it manages to get into the body, often through a cut or scrape.
Here are two ways staph infection spreads:
- Direct, skin-to-skin contact with someone who is either infected or is a carrier.
- Physically touching an object that an infected person or carrier has touched.
- Keep hands clean by washing thoroughly with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
- Keep cuts and scrapes clean and covered with bandages until they heal.
- Avoid contact with other people's wounds or bandages.
- Do not share personal items-such as towels or razors-with another person.
