To work in the trauma department, you will have to attend medical school and then obtain more training for treating and diagnosing ailments that are often involved in emergency settings. This is a specialty field that will involve many years of training.
To become a trauma doctor, you will need to go to a college. You will have to take courses in areas like biology, math, physics and other classes in the science arena. You will have to take and pass the MCAT, in order to get into medical school. You will also need to give the school a letter of recommendation before you'll gain admission into a medical college.
Once you get into a medical school, you will have to be there for four years, extensively learning and studying. During the first two years of your training, you will be in a lab and classroom, studying areas like biochemistry, microbiology, medical ethics, pathology, pharmacology and a variety of other areas. Then during the final two years of medical school, you will be working directly with physicians in hospital settings. You will learn about treating and diagnosing patients that are in surgery, medical specialties, pediatrics and internal medicine.
Once you graduate from medical school, you will have to take and pass the USMLE, a medical exam for licensing. Once you get this you will be licensed to practice in the medical field. You will then need to complete a residency, which can last between two and six years. This will be your time to advance, get paid and obtain on the job training in the specialty area you want to work in. Once you complete your residency, you can become board certified. There are two options for getting certified, through the AOA, or American Osteopathic Association, or the ABMS, also known as the American Board of Medical Specialists.
Working in the trauma department, you will be like other doctors that treat and diagnose patients. The department you will be working in, though, will be in the medical emergency department of the hospital. You will have to get experience for examining medical crises and quickly act. Executing treatments and solving problems quickly are also required.
