Voluntary Examination
There aren't any laws that say that medical billing professionals have to obtain a certificate or how they must go about obtaining one. The medical billing specialist certification is given after completing a voluntary program.
CMRS Exam Sections
The exam for obtaining a medical billing specialist certification is divided into 16 parts: anatomy, physiology, acronyms, clearinghouses, case study, compliance, CMS 1500, CPT -4 Coding, fraud and abuse, insurance carriers, insurance, information technology, general, ICD-9-CM Coding, web and information technology, and managed care.
Retakes
If you were unable to pass the CMRS exam the first time around, you are able to retake the exam up to two times. It is required that you must wait 30 days before retaking it.
Validation
Once you pass the exam and obtain a certificate to become a medical billing specialist, it will be valid for one year. It is required that in this profession, you obtain 15 continuing education units, known as CEUs, to renew your certificate each year.

Certificates for this profession have been handed out for 9+ years, by the Certifying Board of the American Medical Billing Association.
