Function
As a home care coder, you will have to submit insurance claims to insurers for home health care services that have been rendered. The type of services offered in this industry are treatments within the homes of the patients. Working in this field, you will have to assign special codes for the list of procedures that are provided by the health care providers. These codes are entered into a computer system and sent to insurance companies for payment.
Features
If you were to ever need answers about procedures that have been performed on patients, you would just have to contact the worker that performed it. There are different forms of coding systems that are used by insurance companies, so in some instances, you may have to contact the insurance company to find out what codes are used for a particular procedure.
Skills
Home care coders are required to be detail oriented, attentive, patient and have the ability to type in data quickly and accurately into computers. You must also be flexible and a quick learner because new codes are created and some can be changed. You will have to have a good memory to memorize all of the different codes.
Education
You will have to learn a variety of things in post secondary school, such as medical terminology. Before you can work as a medical biller and coder, or home care coder, you will have to acquire a two year degree, an associate's degree, in this industry.
Compensation
The annual salary you can expect to be paid is an average of $45,000.
