How to Become a Registered Health Information Technician

One of the best positions to work in within the health care field that doesn't require patient care duties, is registered health information technician, or RHIT. In this position, you will have to perform two main duties. One is ensuring that medical records have proper codes and the other is using computer apps for analyzing data.

The goal here is to better patient care or reduce costs. You will have to obtain a bachelor's degree and hands on training. With a RHIT credential, you will be able to get into managerial positions in health care facilities.

Instructions



Step One: First, you will need to find a school that offers programs for health information. You will need to obtain an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree to work in this field. You could also study business and health care while taking a bachelor's degree program.

Step Two: Whatever school you decide to look into, make sure that it is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management Education, or CAHIIM. Foreigners living in America will have to complete a program for health information management that is approved by a foreign association that is similar to AHIMA.

Step Three: Once you find a school, you will need to complete the exam for registered health information technicians. This is done after you complete the study program at the school you have chosen. You will need your transcripts in order to gain admittance into a school.

Step Four: Your next step is to pass the RHIT exam and familiarize yourself with the material you've been studying. There are a couple of a resources that you can use to help you study for the exam.

Step Five: After passing the exam, you can start looking for work!
