A pedometer senses your body motion and record a step each time your hip moves up and down. This count is converted into distance by knowing the length of your usual stride.
Routine
At the end of a two-week period, review steps take n from each day and add another 500 steps to your daily routine each week. Continue this until you finally reach the goal of 10,000 steps a day.

For a good rule of thumb, the following is the approximate distance for the number of steps taken :
