Nutrients derived from avocados appear to be particularly adept at fending off oral cancer cells, killing some and preventing precancerous cells from developing into actual cancers.

In the first study of its type, researchers at Ohio State University found that Hass avocados - the variety most commonly sold in grocery stores - are rich in phytochemicals - plant compounds thought to have health-protecting qualities.

"We think these phytochemicals either stop the growth of precancerous cells in the body or they kill the precancerous cells without affecting normal cells," lead author Steven M. D'Ambrosio said. "Our study focuses on oral cancer, but the findings might have implications for other types of cancer."

Avocados are chock-full of beneficial antioxidants, including vitamins C and E, folate, fiber and unsaturated fats. They are naturally sodium-free, contain no trans fats and are low in saturated fats.

CURTAIN CALLS

Daredevil Bobby Leach made a name for himself in 1911 when he became one of only a handful of people to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel. Twenty-five years later, he slipped on a piece of orange peel while living in Auckland, New Zealand, injuring one leg so badly that it had to be amputated. Leach subsequently died of complications.
